“Love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.”
On Monday night, June 1st of 2015, nearly half our church’s membership met to discuss the concept of “Radical Hospitality” and how it can impact and possibly transform our congregation.
The evening began with the leaders of the church providing a fish-fry dinner. The dinner was our leaders’ expression of hospitality. No donations were collected. No one was asked to bring any food. It was not a pot luck dinner. It was our gift to the congregation.
Then, a presentation began on “Radical Hospitality.” I have borrowed the term from Robert Schnase, who uses the term in his book “Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations.” Radical Hospitality is one of the five practices.
Radical Hospitality is “essentially” adopting these five principles:
ALL will receive the same level of excellent hospitality.
No matter who you are, PCW pledges that you will be made to feel at home. And, everyone who visits will receive excellent hospitality. PCW has committed itself to be more than just “nice and friendly” and also never “smothering.” That level of excellent hospitality will be extended to ALL who visit, regardless of race, age, appearance, gender or any other factor.
EVERYONE participates in hospitality
PCW does have greeters and ushers who will extend hospitality to all. But, we also understand that EVERYONE OF US holds a biblical responsibility to extend hospitality to strangers. Smiles, enthusiasm, and the love of Christ abound at PCW.
Hospitality ALL the time
Whether you visit us during Sunday morning worship, or during our Parents’ Day Out program, or if you rent our facilities for a wedding, or if you simply drop by during the week to ask questions, PCW will extend the highest level of Christian hospitality to you, your family and your friends.
Hospitality is THE vision and focus of PCW
At PCW, we have many important ministries that strive to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our community and beyond. We believe that our vision of Radical Hospitality influences every decision we make. Every committee, every small group, every member of a mission project will ask “How does this decision improve the level of our hospitality?”
Hospitality BEYOND our doors
Perhaps most important, PCW will strive to extend hospitality not only to those who pay us a visit, but also to those in our community. Through our community service and local mission work, (whether it is at Loving Hearts Outreach, Harvest Table or simply on the streets) PCW prayerfully commits to furthering the kingdom of God to Washington and to Franklin County. Radical Hospitality strives to improve lives and to strengthen faith.
If you are reading this and are not a member or attendee of PCW, I pray that you will know that we have committed ourselves to truly become focused on our guests. I strongly believe that you will receive the highest level of hospitality if you choose to worship with us.
If you are a member or regular attendee, please prayerfully commit yourself to seeing this vision of “Radical Hospitality” transform every aspect of our ministries.
Blessings in Christ,
